A week ago today, we were just livin' life like normal....talk of 'the storm' was merely talk. We settled in for the night at the B.'s house for supper and to watch American Idol...as the lights flickered...and greenish purple explosions happened all around us. Trees fell in the woods and sounded like guns going off. We head home, settle in and we're awakened by silence around midnight. No power. The only thing we heard were the occasional cracks and crashes of the trees all around us. Seriously. It was spooky. More spooky than hurrican Ike.
Our neighbor's tree was the worst. It's gone now, but here it is, in our yard.
Our giant oak stood pretty firm, once again, but we lost some heavy branches.
Not picnicing any time soon!
Our power was out for appx. 24 hours. We fared well because Steve and Grandpa (who was staying with us that night) drove out to Grandpa's and picked up the generator and a ventless gas heater at 2 am. They dodged trees and downed electric lines and showed back up around 5 am, right before everything began to majorly freeze on the roads. I watched from the window as more limbs crashed all around. We used to have a gas stove, so we moved our electric one out of the way and plugged in our gas heater and it kept us toasty warm. We cooked over a camping stove. We showered at the B.'s house. We hooked up the generator occasionally and shared it with others. Our internet wire went down completely.
Our neighborhood looked like a war zone. Crazy.

We managed.
It's hard to play cards in the dark...hence the headlamp. Don't worry, Su...I don't have a big readership! ;~)
Cheerio fight, songs, sound games...
B. is lookin' too cool with the headlamp. Poor thing was sick the whole week and no doc's office open. ANYWHERE.
We're hooked up to a pretty popular grid (Wal-Monster) and I'm thankful for that! There were many around us that didn't get power until today and many that are still without! It's crazy. But we've maintained an "open house" policy and many have come through this week. It's been crazy and chaotic, but fun!
A lot of drawing...
A lot of gaming...
A lot of lincoln logs...
A lot of fort building...
A lot of eyebrow plucking...
And a lot of rejoicing when lights come back on and appreciating the hum of a dishwasher and the blow of the heat and the smell of clean laundry and the warmth of a nice, hot shower....it's the little things! Except they aren't all that little. We're blessed!
Hoping all power is restored soon. It's been quite an experience. Oh and my internet was restored by Sean and Steve...climbing the pole and whatnot. Thanks guys!!

OH girl!
Sounds like you had a great time together but it is no fun being without power. Glad that things are back to normal.

Hmmm...eyebrow plucking in the dark? That sounds like a risky sport.
Actually it truly sounds like you made the best of the situation. And yes, it truly makes you thankful for the many blessings we tend to take for granted.
