A Date With Dan-Man

We've been trying to implement a once a month "kid date" with the children. We swap up every month, & this month was my date with the man-child. :~) We shared a meal and a fancy dessert (which we never get unless it's a kid date) at a local restaurant and then we went for a couple of rounds of bowling. Bowling was fun, but dinner was better! I love talking with my kids.

Steve & I have been attending our small groups class at church and the current topic as we follow "Love & Respect" by Dr. Eggerich is how a woman talks to a male. You can turn around and apply this to your man-child. So that's what I did. Didn't ask too many questions. Didn't nag at him or talk down to him as if he should understand things. I allowed him to be male. Not tooooo crazy, but male. LOL So, what did I discover?
He's a comedian.
He's competitive.
He's currently digging "Blessed Be The Name."
He's wanting to redo his bedroom.
He's not opposed to "kicking booty" in order to bring Joshua home.
He's not opposed to showing love for his mom in public. Yet.
He occasionally DOES get a full stomach. (THIS was a shocker!)
He wants to be a scientist.
He says, "I can't believe I'm 8. That's so old! I like being a kid."
He really prefers/loves homeschooling.

He's a sweet boy. Not a perfect boy. But he's growing in grace. He's learning along side of his less than perfect parents. I enjoyed my first real "Dan-Man" date. I hope this is the beginning of many more. I truly want to cultivate relationships with my kids that leave the doors WIDE open for any and every form of communication, whether it's gospel-centered, or any other need. I want above all other things for each of my children to know JESUS. These dates allow time for them to open up, ask questions, be honest...and even allows me to peak in to what they struggle with so I can better know how to parent them. It's great.

What a sweet idea! I will have to implement this with our boys when they get home. I don't know why, but I find that "Bats" shirt really funny. It he on some sort of team called the Bats?

Love the kicking booty quote, but really it was all quite interesting...

Yeah, he was on a "fall ball" team named the bats. A bit different, but because it looked so much like batman, he thought it was way cool. :~)

As for the kicking booty quote, that came when I told him we still needed to be approved, hence the need for prayer...I don't think he realized that there was a "chance" that we wouldn't. So, he decided to say, "Ohhhhhhh, he's coming home even if I have to kick some booty."

What a handsome date you have! Sounds like a blast. I was thinking this would be a great thing until I realized that our kids would end up getting only 2 dates a year! ;) When siblings come home they would get bumped to even less then that. What to do?

Your family is just precious and I love seeing what you are up to on your blog.
